Moral lesson from "Sinigang" a story by Marie Aubrey J. Villaceran

The story was entitled as “Sinigang” by
Marie Aubrey J. Villaceran, a professor at the Department of English and Comparative Literature in the University of the Philippines, Diliman. The story was narrated by the first person, Liza, wherein the story revolves about a daughter having a father that has been sleeping with other woman. The story will let us feel emotions like betrayal, anger, pity and empathy and this talks about the reality that others might have gone through in the world we live in.

By reading the story, where many of us could relate to, we can simply get to understand the moral lesson of the story once we dive deeper into the message that the story is trying to tell us. The story doesn’t only revolve about how to prepare and cook a Filipino dish called “sinigang”. This story has a deep yet wonderful lesson that one can learn from it. It teaches us to accept things as they are and forgiveness out of anger that we might feel from others. This story will help us understand different perspective as for every person has their own reasons for their actions even though it is unforgivable like how Liza’s father had another woman aside her mother.

This was a story is meant for everybody to understand. This story talks about how a person learns to accept the reality and by accepting that reality, we can move forward and learn how to forgive people that might have hurted us in the past. Some of us might have been betrayed like Liza but once we let ourselves be free from all those emotions that we feel. We’ll realized that life wasn’t actually that cruel for us to suffer but it is meant to give us a lesson that we will remember for the rest of our lives.

As the world continues to change so as our generation, the way we see things and understand them also changes. The world might seem cruel to some of us, different challenges and circumstances might have hindered our plans for our future but remember that no matter how life has been rough to you and no matter how many people might have betrayed you, always remember to forgive because forgiveness is what sets us free from everything.  If Liza could forgive her father, so do you. Maybe not now, but soon.

"Forgiveness is a gift you give to yourself"
-Tony Robbins
